  • Photographers should also make sure that they snap shots of the relatives given what are christened the "honor" tasks during the ceremony, such as holding the Torah during the service, or opening the ark.

  • An important note to both parents and photographers: make sure that your Temple allows photographs to be taken during the ceremony. Oftentimes, different Temples have different strictures. Whereas one Temple might allow photographs without a flash, others may prohibit photography entirely. This is worth looking into prior to the bar/bat mitzvah taking place! If the Bar/Bat Mitzvah happens to land on the Sabbath, then sorry photographers, while you are welcome to this blessed event, your camera is not! If the service is on a Saturday during a Conservative service, then once again, no photos allowed.

Bob Rothman's Photography does it all. From the best family formals to beautiful artistic candids at the reception and a journalistic flow of the day. Formals of the Bar/bat Mitzvah boy or girl along with the immediate family may be taken at the synagogue prior to the day of event or on the day of. The professional photographer will take portraits usually in front of the ark in the sanctuary. All the different groupings and combinations are taken. For example:
-Bar mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah boy or girl alone
-With siblings and parents
-With both parents
-with each parent separately
-Reading the torah alone
-Reading with family
-Rabbi if present
-Cantor if present
-Holding the torah in front of the ark
-In front of open ark
-Grandparents if available
Many times weather permitting photographers will take out door formals on the temple grounds. Outdoors photos are great especially because many synagogue have great grounds.

On the day of the service and the reception the photographer will arrive early if temple formals were not done during the week. During the week formals are great if it can be done because there is plenty of time, whereas the day of  formal pictures may be rushed.  Nevertheless, the photographer will be able to take beautiful photos if everyone arrives early before the service. The photographer will take the same photos as noted  above. The photographer will even be able to take pictures with the Rabbi and Cantor in front of the ark. Many synagogues will not allow pictures during the service. Although the videographer  many times may be able to take video form the rear of the sanctuary.

Then it's off to the reception hall. During part of the cocktail hour is a good time to do extended family photos. Assign someone in your family to aid the photographer in gathering family members. Both sides of the family portraits will be taken at this time. The photographer will also do some more immediate family photos. Also the photographer will take some pictures of the cocktail  hour. Most important are pictures of displays, sign in board and food.

Next we go to the reception. This is an exciting time. Before the entrance the music starts. The Bar/Bat Mitzvah Photographer will start taken candids at this time. Meanwhile setting up for the entrance of the family.
